These are two of the easiest system trails in Sedona, which makes them perfect for both trail running and mountain biking, as well as hiking. It is possible to extend your hike by taking the social trail around the base of the Cockscomb Ridge.

In the late spring and summer this area is bursting with colorful wildflowers. Perhaps one of the best reasons to hike this trail is to climb the short route to the top of the Cockscomb Ridge at sunrise to watch hot air balloons fly close overhead.

PARKING
From the intersection of State Route 89A and Dry Creek Road head north on Dry Creek Road to the stop sign. Turn left onto Boynton Canyon Road. Proceed to the next stop sign and turn left onto Boynton Pass Road.

There are three designated parking areas that have access to The Airie and Cockscomb Loop. The first two areas are Fay Canyon Parking and Doe Mountain/Bear Mountain Parking. A Red Rock Pass is required to park in both of these areas.

The parking area for Doe Mountain/Bear Mountain is frequently full by 8am. This is the most convenient if Doe Mountain is the intended destination. The parking area at Fay Canyon is larger and both of these lots have restrooms available.
The third parking area is on Airie Road. This parking is free, and there are usually spaces available all day. There are no restrooms available at this location. This is the most convenient if the Cockscomb loop is your destination.

TRAILHEAD ACCESS FROM AIRIE PARKING
There are signs that will point you to the Airie Trail and Cockscomb Loop from the Airie Trail Parking. The Airie and Cockscomb loop trails leave directly from the Airie Parking lot. The trail rating for the summit of Cockscomb is easy. To get there take the social trail at GPS coordinates 34.878544 -111.860044.

TRAILHEAD ACCESS FROM DOE MOUNTAIN / BEAR MOUNTAIN PARKING
You can access the Doe Mountain Trail from the Doe Mountain / Bear Mountain Parking lot. The Airie Trail intersects the beginning of Doe Mountain Trail. If you take a left (North) at the intersection, Aerie Trail will take you towards Boynton Canyon Trail, Deadman’s Pass and Mescal Mesa. If you take a right (south) Aerie Trail will take you to the Cockscomb loop.
