When you reach the saddle at Lower Mushroom Rock you can turn left and get on top of the Mushroom, or turn right into the “Halfpipe” section on the backside of the ridge, where there is always some shade to cool off in on a hot summer day. The view from the top of Lower Mushroom (shown in the two photos below) is sure to make any photographer happy.

FINDING THE SOCIAL TRAIL

Starting from the Boynton Canyon parking area follow the system trail into Boynton Canyon for approximately 1.4 miles. You will be in a long straight section of the trail, lined by thick manzanita bushes on either side (shown below).

On the left side of the trail there is a pretty view in this section, especially if you are there just after sunrise (shown below). This is looking up toward the Women's Village, located in the red cliffs on the right side of this photo.

Near the turn to Lower Mushroom Rock
The social trail to Lower Mushroom Rock is on the right side of the system trail. The photo below shows Lower Mushroom Rock from the Boynton Canyon Trail, at the point where the social turns right (GPS 34.925386 -111.858197). It also shows the route the social trail takes to reach the saddle between Lower Mushroom and the ridge it has separated from.

Before the social trail starts uphill, it first goes downhill and crosses the normally dry creek bed (shown below). It turns uphill about 30 yards after crossing the creek. This is actually the bottom end of the social trail to Warrior's Pass, the Eagle's Nest and Upper Mushroom (covered on a separate page). Even though it's a social trail it's well established and fairly easy to follow.
