An offshoot of the Courthouse Loop, Big Park is a system trail in the Coconino National Forest. It is well marked with signs and easy to follow. Because it is immediately adjacent to the Village of Oak Creek, it is popular with bicycle enthusiasts as well as hikers. Many visitors staying at this end of the VOC can access Big Park without needing a vehicle.
Toward the back of the Big Park Loop traffic drops off considerably and the scenery becomes more dramatic. An interesting system trail goes out toward the Rabbit Ears (shown below) and drops down to the Jacks Canyon trailhead.
There's a large pocket off to the left of the Rabbit Ears trail that seems ripe for exploring (shown below) but as of this edition we've never been back there. You won't meet many people out here.
FINDING THE TRAILHEAD
The Bell Rock Vista parking area off Hwy 179, just north of the Village of Oak Creek. Follow the Bell Rock Pathway east a short distance to the junction with Big Park.
