Cool and shaded in the summer months, Bear Sign Canyon is the perfect place to escape the more crowded trails close to town. There is a sublime level of peace and quiet out here, which is actually just a little over three miles from town.
The hike starts out on the Dry Creek Trail and immediately enters the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. At .5 miles the Bear Sign Trail branches off to the left (see OVERVIEW MAP below) at a well marked intersection.
As the name implies, there is indeed a healthy population of black bears in the area. If you hike early enough in the morning during the warmer months there is a reasonably good chance you might see one. You will most certainly see the droppings they leave behind.
Other than the bears there is no big payoff at the end of Bear Sign Canyon – no Devil’s Bridge or Lost Canyon cliff dwelling – just a lot of beautiful scenery in a true wilderness setting with very few people.
However, along the way there is a beautiful arch that makes a photo worthy side hike. What I call Secret Arch (aka Anvil Arch, shown above) is approximately 1.25 miles from the parking area on the right side of Bear Sign Canyon. It is visible from the system trail (shown below).
