Hangover is an official system trail in the Coconino National Forest. It is one of the of the most exciting and dynamic trails to be added to the system in years. First constructed illegally by local mountain bikers, Hangover was so good the Forest Service decided to adopt it.

Hiker in the saddle on the Hangover Trail

The trail is now marked with some signs, but it is mostly white blazes painted on the slickrock. For mountain bikes this is an extremely challenging one directional singletrack. There are exposed off camber slickrock sections, steep slickrock climbs, narrow packed dirt exposed sections, twisty off camber sections, and narrow rock ledges.

Starting from the paved parking area at the bottom of Schnebly Hill, hikers begin on the Munds Wagon trail.  After 1.7 miles take the junction left onto Hangover Trail. You will slowly rise up a series of switchbacks as Mitten Ridge towers over you. Arriving in the saddle a majestic view of Oak Creek Canyon suddenly opens up in front of you. After a short, steep ascent the trail levels out as you hike a 4-6 foot wide ledge along the backside of Mitten Ridge.

As you near the end of Mitten Ridge the trail rises back up onto the Cow Pies saddle (shown in the photo at the top of this page). Stay left as you descend down the backside of this saddle. Follow the Cow Pies trail to reconnect back with Munds Wagon Trail. Be sure to bring your camera because this hike is truly spectacular.

FINDING THE TRAILHEAD

This trail can be accessed from several parking areas along Schnebly Hill Rd. Only the first one can be reached without a high clearance 4x4. From the junction of Hwy 89A and 179 (the double roundabout), take Hwy 179 south, cross the bridge over Oak Creek, and exit left onto Schnebly Hill Rd at the next roundabout.

Take the paved portion of Schnebly Hill Rd approximately .5 miles to the paved parking area on the left just before the road turns to dirt. A Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required. If you have a high clearance 4x4 you can park free of charge higher up on Schnebly Hill (see map below).
