The Spirit Caves

The Spirit Caves is a popular destination for photographers in the Coconino National Forest. The caves are accessed via a social trail that branches east off the Soldiers Pass Trail, approximately .8 miles from the nearest parking area on the map below. It is also possible to take a well established social trail from the Devil's Kitchen sinkhole to Seven Pools. The turn off Soldiers Pass is just beyond Seven Pools (see at bottom of page).

It's easy to see why photographers love these "caves". It's actually a double arch that creates an interesting window for light to filter in (see photo above). It's possible to walk the narrow ledge shown and exit to the mesa top above.  Getting into the caves from below requires a Class 2 scramble. The Spirit Caves are easily visible from the Soldiers Pass Trail (first photo below).

FINDING THE TRAILHEAD

The best place to park is either the parking area at Soldiers Pass (only open Monday - Wednesday), or the Posse Grounds Park & Ride (free shuttle required). The Soldiers Pass parking area is located in a residential neighborhood, all of which is a tow-away zone if you park on the street.
