Teacup

Teacup is a system trail in the Coconino National Forest. It is well marked with signs and easy to follow. Despite being close to several neighborhoods, it is lightly traveled. Heading north from the Sugarloaf parking area, Teacup passes the Thunder Mountain Trail, then meanders east toward Soldiers Pass and Uptown Sedona. Along the way it passes between Coffeepot Rock to the north and Sugarloaf Hill to the south.

Thunder Mountain looms large above the Teacup Trail in Sedona

The Summit Trail branches to the right (south) for a 250 ft climb to the top of this hill, where there are panoramic views of the entire Verde Valley. Approximately one mile from the parking area, the Coffeepot Trail branches to the left (north) and goes to the base of Coffeepot Rock, one of the most notable rock formations in town.

Two miles from the parking area, the Teacup Trail ends just south of the parking area at Soldiers Pass. It is possible to make a loop for part of the route, either by turning on the Coffeepot Trail and following a nice ledge along the base of the rock, then dropping down to Soldiers Pass for a return on Teacup, OR by taking the Sugarloaf Loop.

FINDING THE TRAILHEAD

The best place to park is at either end of the trail, which is the really small lot on Buena Vista Drive (pass required) or the incredibly tiny lot at Soldiers Pass (free). Both of these lots are hubs used to access numerous trails. As you might imagine from that description, parking often is more difficult than the hike. The free shuttle service offered by the city is probably the best option on weekends. You can catch the shuttle at Posse Grounds Park & Ride on Camuth Drive.
